Global Science & Technology Names Dr. Darrel Williams as Chief Scientist

Greenbelt, MD —Global Science & Technology, Inc. (GST) proudly announced that Dr. Darrel L. Williams has accepted the position of Chief Scientist. The Chief Scientist at GST is responsible for broad scientific support and serves as an advisor to the company executive staff regarding future directions and business applications of scientific work and opportunities.

“We are very fortunate to have a person with Dr. Williams’ extensive Earth Science background as our new Chief Scientist,” said GST President Chieh-san Cheng. “He is widely known as one of NASA’s premiere scientists and managers with an impressive 35-year career. We believe he will help lead GST to great opportunities.”

Dr. Williams spent his entire career at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center where he served most recently as the Associate Chief of the Hydrospheric and Biospheric Sciences Laboratory within the Earth Science Division. He was also the Landsat Project Scientist from 1992 until his recent retirement. Throughout his NASA career, Dr. Williams has been actively involved in remote sensing research. The majority of this work has involved the development and enhancement of techniques for assessing forest ecosystems worldwide.

“Having been on ‘the other side of the table’ for over 35 years,” Dr. Williams said, “I am looking forward to offering GST a valuable perspective on how they might be perceived when going forward with new proposed activities. I also have developed strong ties to a diverse range of Earth Science experts over the years, such that when I call or e-mail them, they will listen or respond. That can be a huge benefit.” Williams also pointed out that the number of people who have been fortunate enough to serve as the Project Scientist of a major Earth Science mission is very limited because there have been so few missions over the years. These are the people who have actually “walked the walk” (as opposed to simply “talking the talk”) when assuring the scientific integrity of the data to be collected and distributed from such a mission. “I have ‘walked the walk’ more than once, and I have been the supervisor of several others who have served in the Project Science role, so I have ample firsthand experience to draw upon which is invaluable for the kind of support work that GST does.”

Dr. Williams explained he sees the Chief Scientist as someone who also promotes cross-disciplinary research in Earth Science and is ultimately responsible for scientific quality and integrity.
