Web Applications Developer
Global Science & Technology, Inc (GST), a growing high technology company, is seeking an experienced Web Applications Developer to support the North American Breeding Bird Survey Program at the US Geological Survey's Patuxent Wildlife Research Center. The position is based in Laurel, MD.
Project Description:
The North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) is a long‐term, large‐scale avian monitoring program established in 1966 to monitor the status and trends of North American avifauna. Each year approximately 3000 routes are surveyed by primarily volunteer participants who are skilled in avian identification. From these data, bird population trends are calculated which in turn are used, along with other indicators, by conservation agencies and many other organizations to assess and set species conservation priorities.
Primary Duties:
- Work independently and as part of a team to develop application requirements and timelines for the North American Breeding Bird Survey geo‐spatial data collection and
display applications, including the preparation of requirements document for review by others. Use problem-solving skills to develop appropriate alternatives to be considered while application requirements are being defined that consider time, cost, and resource availability; finalize project requirements; prepare project design documents.
- Develop web‐based, geo‐spatial mapping application; write code; and test implement, and maintain applications using various web development tools such as but not limited
to, ColdFusion, JavaScript, Java, Transact‐SQL, Fusebox, and OpenLayers with an understanding of screen design issues that meet government security and accessibility standards including Section 508 compliance.
- Work with other programmers and biologists during beta‐ and live testing of all developed modules; must have willingness and ability to develop multiple options for consideration by the testing team. Use problem-solving skills to develop appropriate alternative options for consideration by others. Communicate with the team to identify and resolve all potential problems.
- Develop new data tables and/or modify existing data tables in SQL Server 2005/2008 software to meet the specifications of the application requirements documents. Work with program biologists and IT specialists to design new databases or tables that will meet the desired functionality. Use Transact-SQL to emphasize stored procedure and trigger development and the optimization of database indexes and processes. Develop appropriate documentation for all databases for future reference by other programmers.
Experience/Knowledge Required:
- Minimum of 2 years recent experience, 3 years preferred, developing and maintaining web-based geospatial mapping applications.
- Proficiency with MS SQL 2005/2008, ColdFusion 8, JavaScript, Geospatial software (i.e. ESRI, Google Maps, Open Layers, and Map Point is required.
- Will have experience developing and maintaining web applications used to collect and manage ecological or biological monitoring data. Familiarity or experience with avian point counts a plus.
- Will be knowledgeable of and have experience with developing web0based mapping applications using geospatial software and tools like, but not limited to: Google Maps, Map Point, ESRI or other GIS software.
- Must have technical expertise to evaluate web-based geospatial mapping technologies and provide clear and concise recommendations for project direction.
Education Level Required
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Management or related field.
Some travel will be required.
